Market News Pound hits one-month low as BOE drops more rate cut hints - REUTERS MARCH 22, 2024 LONDON, March 22 (Reuters) - The pound fell to its lowest so far this month on Friday, after data showed UK consumer spending stagnated in February and Bank of England (BoE) Governor Andrew Bailey said rate cuts "were in play" this year. Sterling fell 0.6% to $1.262, its lowest since March 1, having dropped nearly 1% the previous day after the BoE kept rates unchanged but signalled a loosening in monetary policy was on the cards. Against the euro , the pound was down 0.2% at 85.99 pence. On Thursday, the BoE left interest rates unchanged, but in its statement, it suggested it was edging towards making a change to monetary policy.  IPOB expects Nnamdi Kanu to be freed soon The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has said that it expects freedom for its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, by April 8 when his case comes up in court. Spokesperson of the group, Emma Powerful in a statement on Sunday explained that the Federal Government has no tangible reason not to let Kanu go despite charges before him being amended to keep him in detention.  BREAKING: PANIC AS ABBA KYARI’S WIFE SLUMPS IN COURT A lady, identified as wife of the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, Abba Kyari, on Monday, fainted at the Federal High Court in Abuja. She slumped on the ground shortly after trial Justice Emeka Nwite deferred ruling on applications that DCP Kyari and six other persons facing drug trafficking charge with him, filed to be released on bail pending the determination of the case against them. The middle aged woman, who wore a black Hijab, fell on the floor while armed operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, were leading Kyari and the others away from the court premises. Though she appeared lifeless on the floor, she was quickly carried up and rushed inside one of the offices on the third floor of the court by some officials of the NDLEA and lawyers.  NDLEA seeks AGF’s approval to confiscate Kyari’s assets, bank accounts NDLEA has written a letter to the AGF seeking his approval for the confiscation of properties and assets belonging to the once revered super cop. It was gathered that the NDLEA’s request was dispatched to the justice minister last week following the March 7 arraignment of Kyari and his men for dealing in cocaine. Kyari is facing eight counts of conspiracy, obstruction, and dealing in cocaine, and other related offences at the Federal High Court, Abuja. The other defendants in the charge marked FHC/ABJ/57/2022, are four members of the IRT, Ubua, Bawa James, Simon Agirigba and John Nuhu.  NDLEA Traces ₦4.2 Billion To Abba Kyari Fresh facts have emerged on how suspended super cop and former Commander of the Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari; as well as his deputy, ACP Sunday Ubua, allegedly received a combined N4.2bn from their separate bank accounts. The details are part of a report sent to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, by the NDLEA. According to the drug enforcement agency, not less than N1.4bn passed through Kyari’s account while he was commander of the IRT. However, Kyari’s deputy, Ubua, may have received far more than him as not less than N2.8bn was traced to his eight bank accounts. According to investigations, Ubua allegedly received a lump sum of N2.664bn on August 15, 2019.  Killing people for rituals won’t make you rich overnight, Ben Bruce tells youths Ben Murray-Bruce, a former Nigerian senator, has lamented the increasing trend of ritual killings among young people. In a tweet, the former senator said young people who are supposed to be the “leaders of tomorrow now engage in unimaginable crimes just to become millionaires overnight”. “What has suddenly gone wrong with young people who now believe that rituals involving human blood will make them rich?” he asked. “So many Nigerians go missing daily, and while many are never found.  ASUU Begins Preparation For Strike, Declares Monday Lecture-free; The Academic Staff Union of Universities has urged its chapters across the country to sensitise members of the public on the situation between the union and the Federal Government. This is as it declared Monday, February 7, 2022, as a lecture-free day in a bid to enhance the sensitisation. The National President of the Union, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, disclosed this in an interview on Saturday evening. The last national strike by ASUU was in March 2020 and it lasted till December 2020, when a Memorandum of Action was signed. However, a year after signing the MoA, ASUU accused the government of failing to fulfil its side of the bargain and threatened to mobilise for another strike immediately.  Obasanjo named eternal grand patron of kegites;  Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has been named eternal patron of Kegites club, a socio-cultural group in Nigeria. The Kegites club was established in 1962 at the then University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.  Police: 150 suspects arrested, 61 guns recovered in Imo within one year The Imo police command says it arrested 150 suspects linked to kidnapping and “terrorism” within one year in the state. Rabiu Hussaini, Imo commissioner of police, announced this on Friday when he received Hope Uzodimma, governor of Imo, at the command’s headquarters in Owerri. According to Hussaini, the command also recovered 61 guns, as well as 27 vehicles from suspects. “Between the months of January 2021 and January 2022, the unit arrested a total of 105 kidnappers/armed robbers, 45 terrorists, and recovered 27 vehicles of different makes and assorted caliber of arms and ammunition,” he said. Evans denies being a kidnapper, says ‘police forced me to sign documents; Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike, suspected kidnap kingpin all known as Evans, had denied the allegation of his involvement in abducting a certain businessman. While answering questions from Yusuf Sule, the prosecution counsel, during Friday’s court session, Evans said he was forced to sign documents and act in a certain manner as directed by the police. He denied being a kidnapper, adding that he has a transport business with over 30 workers. Evans also denied collecting $420,000 as ransom from the family of one Sylvanus Ahamonu, a businessman, stating that he never met the man until his arrest. Ahamonu and his wife testified via Zoom on December 17. The businessman had told the court that his car was ambushed by some men in police and military uniforms, including Evans, who claimed to be officers of the defunct special anti-robbery squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force.
